The Avoyel Indians are considered to be the indigenous tribe of Avoyelles Parish with its ceremonial site located in Marksville. The Avoyel culture is similar to the practices of the southern Hopewell tribes of the Ohio River Valley. This is evident through the Mounds found at the Marksville site.
